One of the oldest educational institutes of India, the Benares Hindu University, was established in 1916 on the banks of the Ganges. It was a dream of nationalist Madan Mohan Malviya to establish a Hindu University in the Holy city of Varanasi which received an overwhelming response from the noted freedom fighters and patronage from the Hindu rich class from all over the country. The University earlier dedicated primarily for the studies of Indian Culture and Sanskrit now has taken a big shape and has become one of the prime educational institutions of India today.
