Chamoli is located in the northern part of Uttar Pradesh. The northern part of Chamoli shares its border with Tibet in China, and the adjoining districts are those of Uttarkashi, Tehri, Pauri, Uttarkashi, Pithoragarh and Almora.

Chamoli, a hill district of Uttranchal, has immense geographical, historical, religious and cultural importance. Chamoli lies in the arms of the heavenly Himalayas and is full of natural beauty. This land has inspired the imaginations of great poets like Kalidas. These mountain ranges, rivers and valleys are associated with several Gods &Goddesses. The celebrated shrine of Badrinath, a famous pilgrimage of Hindus, the well-known "Valley of Flowers" and Auli Bugyal are situated here. Today, this district encompasses several religious and holy spots, gushing rivers and majestic snow clad peaks, which are a delight for adventure loving tourists. Gopeshwar is the district headquarters of Chamoli and is situated at a height of 1308 m.
