Chamoli is located in the northern part of Uttar Pradesh. The northern part of Chamoli shares its border with Tibet in China, and the adjoining districts are those of Uttarkashi, Tehri, Pauri, Uttarkashi, Pithoragarh and Almora.

Gopeshwar is the district headquarters of Chamoli and is situated at a height of 1308 m.
